Debbie Curran Photography bio picture

Welcome to Debbie Curran's Blog!

I am a native of St. Simons Island, GA, and began my photography and arts career at an early age with my mom’s Canon F-1 and Nikromat cameras. Though initially self-taught in film, I am actively involved in digital photography and it is my passion.

I've earned two Bachelor of Science degrees from Georgia Southern University as well as an undergraduate focus in broadcasting. It was while working with Barefoot Video Production as a videographer and MAP International as a webmaster that the once abandoned hobby of photography began to usher back into my life.

Currently, I am a member of the Glynn Arts Association, president of the Coastal Photographer's Guild and am actively involved in displaying my art in local venues and abroad.

Angie Jayne

What a beautiful day! The weather on St. Simons was just perfect. 73 degrees, sun shining and a bit of a breeze… perfect for my great friend (and current Bostonite) Stephanie and her precious Angie. I spent a few hours catching up with Steph, we’ve  been friends since back in middle school days (Coach Speakman’s class to be exact).

It was so cute and I can’t believe the things I take for granted. Angie is 1 year and 1 week old and now that she’s able to sit up and play… she’s never experienced sand! I guess in Boston during the most of her developmental stages it’s been too cold or too snowy to even know what sand is. Needless to say, she was not interested in the camera, but more with the sand. I did manage to get a couple where we surprised her with a ‘Hey Angie’ or making some squeaking sound.

Meetup Group – Driftwood Beach – Jekyll Island, GA

Today we had our second Photographer’s Meetup field trip. We chose Driftwood Beach at Jekyll Island, GA for our location and we focused our trip on helping each other out with posing, camera settings, what we thought would make a better photo etc. It turned out to be a really great trip where everyone was excited to learn and try different things. We had a mother – son team, a mother – daugherter team and a family of three that served as our models as well as all of us photographers switching off from being photographers to models occasionally. It helped us both learn and empathize with subjects in how we give direction.

Here are just a select few of the shots from tonight…

Katharina and Clay – Wedding

Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day – a little cool – but blue skies above with the sun shining kept us warm. You really couldn’t have asked for better weather for a wedding day. I’ll be posting a few photos after I get done culling through the bulk of them.

They were married at 3P.M. at Victory Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, FL. A bright and lovely lit church with stained glass at the alter. The reception followed at Borrell Creek Restaurant in Saint Marys, GA. (Did I mention fantastic food to complement the gorgeous view of the creeks and marsh.)  Before heading over to the restaurant, Katharina and Clay had photos taken down at the waterfront in Saint Marys, I’ll be posting a few of those as well.

Thanks to everyone at the wedding who wanted their photos taken too. I’ll be working on those as well and have links for those of you who would like to order.

Oak Grove Cemetery Shoot – Meetup Group

Early morning shoot, out of town, about an hour away… I’m just glad I got some good shots despite the pre-dawn hours and the gray morning. Seems like I’m getting a few overcast days here lately. And as an FYI, mom and I decided to go to the St. Marys waterfront for sunrise before the actual Meetup group time… not a good idea. Where the sunrises you see is right behind some pulp mill factory, so if your looking to have spectacular shots of the sunrising over the marsh and river with factory in the way… that’s your spot!

All kidding aside, we decided to meet at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys which has some really neat architecture/statues/memorials along with some hidden beauty. We worked on depth of field trying to single out our subject by blurring out the background. Here’s what I found in the shoot:

Holley Photo Shoot

I was wondering what type of photos would come out of this shoot. It was an overcast day, very gray and quite windy. Typically, the overcast conditions would’ve been a photographer’s dream, but on this day – right before sunset – it was just kind of dark and then it happened… that one little bit of breakthrough in the clouds where the sun peeked through for just a few minutes during that magic hour and several beautiful pictures were captured. Holley is such a beautiful girl and the way the sun caught the light in her eyes toward the end of the shoot was just spectacular.
